The Collection of Birgitta Sharpe & The Late Professor Eric Sharpe, Denistone West | Onsite Auction will be conducted via our Timed Bid Auction Format. Born in Lancaster, Emeritus Professor Eric Sharpe (1933-2000) was an international authority on the reception and understanding of world religions. The protege of British postwar academic, S. G. F. Brandon, Sharpe studied and worked in Sweden and the U.K, before joining the University of Sydney as Professor of Religious Studies in 1977, where he stayed until his retirement in 1996. Sharpe authored several books and through the 1980's and '90s had a popular morning radio program on religion, culture and society. He was also an accomplished flautist and composer, and passionate about literature, in particular the books of Rudyard Kipling among others. The daughter of a Swedish minister and a dedicated theology student, Birgitta married Eric in Sweden in 1962. Birgitta worked with her husband, organising the International History of Religions Congress. She has also worked as a librarian in Lancaster, a presenter on 2EA and SBS Radio, then as chancery officer at the Consulate General for Sweden in Sydney. Birgitta’s lifelong passion for languages lead to work as an independent translator. Birgitta is a well know and highly respected member of the Swedish community in Sydney. She was a contributor to the ‘Scandinavian Herald’, editor of the NSW Swedish community newsletter for 17 years, one of the founding members of ‘The Swedish Club’ in Sydney, the founding member of the ‘Swedish Church in Sydney’ and has been very active on several other Swedish cultural organisations. Birgitta was the moving force behind the Sydney Scandinavian community’s engagement with the Sydney Olympic ‘Scandinavian Café’ in 2000. To be offered over two auctions, The Collection of Birgitta Sharpe & The Late Professor Eric Sharpe features vintage furniture, Swedish design objects, antiques, prints & collectables, plus an interesting collection of books including academic and Swedish texts, Kipling and first editions.
